Dr.C.P.G.Vallabhan took his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Kerala University and joined the University Centre at Cochin as a lecturer in 1969. He became a Professor of Physics in 1984 and became the Director of the University Science Instrumentation Centre at Cochin University of Science & Technology in 1986.He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Technology (2002-2007), and the Director (2002-2008) of the Centre of Excellence in Lasers and Optoelectronic Sciences (CELOS) at Cochin University of Science & Technology. He has been the Founder Director in 1995 of the International School of Photonics at CUSAT where he is also an Emeritus Professor presently.
He has produced 27 Ph.D.’s and published over 300 research papers in international journals in the field of Lasers, Optoelectronics and Optical Engineering and Photonic Materials and has authored 3 books.He had been a Commonwealth Fellow in the University of Southampton,England; a Visiting Scientist at the Spectra Physics Laboratory in California and Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York; a DAAD Visiting Professor in Fraunhofer Institute in Freiburg, Germany; and a Visiting Professor to Eindhoven Technical University in the Netherlands on many occasions.He is the past President of Photonics Society of India, past Vice President of Indian Laser Association, a Fellow of Optical Society of India and a Member of New York Academy of Sciences. He is now the President of Kerala Science & Technology Society (India).
He has also served as a member of the Syndicate of CUSAT and a member of the Governing body of the Nuclear Science Centre in New Delhi and also as a Technical Advisor to the Science and Engineering Research Council of the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India.He writes popular articles in local and national magazines on topics related to science and society and history and philosophy of science.He has received many awards for his research work in the field of Laser Technology including that of NDT Society of India and BVP International and Indian Laser Association.
